As part of Nexen’s long-standing commitment to giving back to our host communities in Yemen, we are proud to support the Yemen Scholarship Program. This year, an additional 12 Nexen Yemen scholarship students will graduate from the University of Calgary and SAIT. The graduates include three engineers, three information technologists, two geophysicists, one economist, one accountant, one computer scientist, and a cellular, molecular and microbial biologist.
Marvin Romanow, Nexen’s President and CEO, hosted a celebration dinner for the graduates on Wednesday, June 10. Also in attendance that evening were Yemeni Ambassador Khaled Bahah, past scholarship winners and Nexen representatives.
Marvin took the opportunity that evening to recognize their experience and also congratulate them on their successes.
“It took a lot of courage to come to Canada to advance your education,” Marvin said. “In addition to the grind and intensity of university life, there’s a lot of emotion around being thousands of miles away from home and family. It sounds like you’ve become better and more confident people as a result of the time you’ve spent here – through both the good times and more challenging moments.”
In his closing remarks, Marvin told the graduates, “This milestone is a culmination of a lot of hard work and you should be proud of your accomplishments. I wish you truly happy and fulfilling lives ahead and I hope that you stay in touch with us at Nexen.”
This year marks the eleventh year of the Yemen Scholarship Program. Since 1998, Nexen has awarded over 110 scholarships. By the end of 2009, a total of 55 students will have graduated from Nexen’s Yemen Scholarship Program.
Congratulations Graduates!
