Healthy meal choices have become the norm at the Scott Platform.
January 19, 2009
Eating healthy can be difficult, especially when you work in the middle of the North Sea. But at Scott Platform, healthy meal choices have become the norm. The changes that were made to the daily menu have earned Scott Platform a Healthy Living Award – making it the first offshore site in Scotland to receive it.
“I was not surprised at receiving the award as such,” says Phil Craigen, an offshore installation manager at the Scott Platform. “But I was very pleased as this is a just reward to all the personnel at Nexen and the Aramark catering team who put a great deal of effort into developing the healthy menus and implementing them.”
The Healthy Living Award was developed in 2006 to recognize catering companies who increased the amount of healthy food on their menus. It is currently funded by the Scottish Government and is open to most food outlets and restaurants in Scotland. To qualify for the award, caterers need to meet a set of key criteria, which includes a commitment to providing and supporting healthier eating (as demonstrated on the menu selection), how they prepare food, marketing and promotional activities and how food is presented and sold.
At Scott Platform, the Aramark team introduced low-fat, low-salt foods that now make up more then half of the meal selections available. The team faces unique challenges including providing quality meals to workers on different schedules and working with food that is only delivered by boat every 10 days. The catering staff presented the new menu items to workers in a way that emphasized the benefits of taste as much as health.
“Employees have responded very favourably to the changes with many now choosing to have soup and a sandwich for lunch rather than a full meal as they did previously,” says Phil. “They now see a much greater choice of dishes available. Nobody noticed the switch to the low sodium content salt and the general view is that the food tastes better.”
